We bought this house from Dennis Brownfield, a family friend who believed that Kauai was simply the best place on earth and that experiences should be shared. We intend to carry on his tradition and hope to fill our year on the island with as many friends as possible.
As Dennis would say, "This is your vacation." We are honored to be a part of it. This website is designed to help you plan your vacation! We are thrilled to be a part of your adventure; but know that first and foremost, this time is for you.
After all.... we live here :)
Let us know when you would like to come, what you'd like to do, and if you'd like us to join you in any of your experiences!
🌋 Unlike its siblings, Kauai's soil is clay, not volcanic rock, and the island is mostly rural jungle and small towns. 90% of the island is reserved for conservation and agriculture.
🪨 Geologically it is the oldest island in the chain (5.1 million years old) and was likely to be the first island inhabited by Polynesian peoples.
⛰️ Mount Waialeale, the largest mountain on the island is the wettest place on earth, averaging 450 inches of rain a year.
🏖️ Kauai's has 111 miles of coastline and includes not only the most accessible beaches of all the islands but also the longest uninterrupted beach of any island (Polihale).
☕ Kauai is home to the largest coffee plantation in the U.S.
🐷 There are more wild pigs than residents.
🦖 The island appears in many scenes from Jurrasic Park; you will not be able to avoid the dinosaurs that still call the island home (local chickens).
🏠 Hanapepe has approximately 2,500 residents, making it an average-sized town on the island.
🌎 Hanapepe was home to native Hawaiians until Captain Cook colonized the island in 1778. In the 19th century, the town was home to Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino immigrants who worked on the nearby sugar plantations. It was inhabited by G.I.'s in the 1950s making it one of Kauai's most populated towns at the time.
🥳 As one of the few towns on the island not overseen directly by a sugar cane plantation, Hanapepe was Kauai's original "party town".
📚 Hanapepe is home to the westernmost bookstore in the U.S.
🎨 Hanapepe has more than 15 art galleries.
