What to bring

What to bring:

Sandals or any shoes that sand will wash through
Hiking boots or good tennis shoes that can get dirty and stained
Sun-shirt or other lightweight cover, breathable fabrics
Sunglasses and a hat, the sun can be intense
Light jacket/sweater, nights get chilly with the ocean breeze, and light weight long pants for evening mosquitos
Lightweight rain jacket
Two or more swimsuits so one is always dry and ready to go
Hawaiian prints! Don't have a Hawaiian shirt? You can borrow one from us :)

What to leave at home:

Don't bring anything white! The soil on the island is 90% clay and bright red
Towels, don't waste the weight, we have plenty at the house
Sunscreen, we have plenty and we buy the reef safe brands
Aloe, don't worry, we have it in bulk
Excess clothes, we have a washer and drier. Leave room in your suitcase for souvenirs and feel free to plan on doing laundry at our house.
There's absolutely no reason to pack pants or shoes (besides running/hiking). You'll never wear them. - Alex and Natalia

Adventure Gear

Hiking:

You don't need much for hiking.

We have extra water bottles and plenty of sunscreen.
Bring your own shoes and day packs.
If you don't have a hat, one will be provided for you. Yes, it will be a rainbow umbrella hat.

Snorkeling & SCUBA:

We have 6 adult and 2 small/child-size masks, but if you have one, you should bring your own!
We have 2 adult and 1 small/child-sized snorkles.
Fins for booties, best for places with rocks and reefs (the booties protect your feet until you are floating): 2 men's large and 2 women's regular/medium.
Full-foot fins, best for sandy beaches where you can enter the water barefoot: 3 Large, 3 small/medium, 1 juniors 9-13.
We have dive tanks and weights! All other dive gear will need to be rented.

Boogie Boarding:

We have 3 Boogy Boards
We recommend wearing a skin or some sort of skin protection, the sad is abrasive, and it's very easy to lose your bottoms in the surf.

To rent a car or not to rent a car...

Rental cars on the island range from $30 (low end of Turo) to $430 (high end of Expedia) a day.
If you're here for a week, you're looking at $230 minimum (with fees).
Here are some things to consider before signing over your singing voice to Ursula for a ride.

Ways to avoid car rental

We work during the week, but we are off work around 2pm most days and have our weekends free to explore the island. If you don't mind the company, run your itinerary by us! If we are coming with you we are happy to drive, or if schedules allow, we are happy to do drop off and pick up!
There is an excellent bus route on the island and a bus stop within walking distance of the house! Check out the map!
Plan strategically! Even a few days without a car can save you hundreds of dollars. If you are planning on spending the weekend with us, only rent a car during the work week. If you plan activities on the bus route on either side of the weekend you can reduce your car rental days further.

Reasons to rent a car

Freedom. We do not expect you to schedule your vacation around our work schedule.
We often have many visitors and can't always guarantee we can give rides to everyone for group activities. The more the merrier! But no, we will not let you sit in the trunk and we will not tie you to the roof (no matter how good at surfing you are).

P.S.

If you do rent a car, it will get sandy and muddy. Don't stress! We have all the equipment for a quick wash before you drop your car off, but be ye warned! Cleaning does take time. Give yourself a ~30 minute window for cleaning before you say goodbye to your car.
